About

The Aquarium Piran is part of the Science Centre of the University of Primorska, which unites units dedicated to presenting the scientific and research work of the University of Primorska to the general public. In the aquarium you can immerse yourself in the underwater world of the Northern Adriatic, and in the Archaeological Park San Simon you can see what life in our area used to be in the past.

In the Aquarium Piran, you will get to know the unique the underwater world of the Northern Adriatic, which is home to about 140 different species of organisms, with fish being the most numerous.

There are more than 60 different species to see, including schools of sea bass, mullet, bream and other open sea fish, as well as coastal zone fish, like damselfish, dreamfish, brown meagres, seabreams, and many others.

In all units of the UP Science Centre, both individuals and groups are welcome.
Visits are specially adapted for primary and secondary schools visits.

You can see congers, moray eels and the curious dusky grouper in the holes of the rocky reef. While in the smaller aquariums you can admire different species of blennys, triplefins, wrasses, sea basses, gobies, and clingfishes. With some patience, you will also see the ones that hide buried in the sandy and muddy bottom, showing little more than eyes and fins; those are true soles, rays, and stingrays.

Of course, you will be amazed by particular species such as seahorses, which from time to time fascinate us with their mating dance, and also common sharks and catsharks. There are also many crustaceans, from the tiny rockpool shrimp to the mighty European lobster and the rare spiny lobster. They share aquariums with many mollusks, from bivalves and sea snails to octopus and cuttlefish.

Many species of sponges, tunicates, cnidarians, and, above all, echinoderms, including various species of starfish, cucumbers, urchins and brittle stars, contribute to the colorfulness and variety of the aquariums.
